Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Education Partnership

The key involvement of GASH and of individual headteachers at executive level has raised the profile of initial teacher training in the county and has brought considerable benefits in quality assurance and enhancement. As Ofsted (2003) reported:

Headteachers and the University have established a strong and long standing partnership. They collaborate closely in providing initial teacher training which is based firmly on the effective contribution of schools and teachers. A clearly articulated rationale is understood fully by all involved in training and leads to an unusually strong emphasis on high quality training and outcomes.

PE trainee teachers

There is much to be celebrated by the partnership created between schools and the University of Gloucestershire. Many of our newly qualified teachers have gone on to posts within Gloucestershire schools and partnership schools in neighbouring counties. The management of the course, writing of course materials, and the interviewing of potential course members are all undertaken by representatives of both partners.

Training to be a secondary school teacher through the Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Education Partnership (GITEP) illustrates the benefits to be gained from working with professional orgnaisations and expert practitioners. Indeed, the school-centred nature of our programmes enables trainee teachers to acquire the professional values, skills and knowledge necessary to progress in a career in teaching. The scheme has been widely acclaimed, receiving considerable interest both nationally and internationally.

The Gloucestershire Initial Teacher Education Partnership endorses the equal opportunities and race equality policy of the University of Gloucestershire. The Partnership is committed to equal opportunities and race equality in all aspects of its activities. Our expectation is that all schools providing placements will recruit and treat students fairly and without regard to gender, marital status, sexual orientation, race, colour, religion, nationality, ethnic or national origins or any other criterion that is not relevant or justified. People with disabilities will be assessed on the basis of their abilities and potential, according to the needs of the job. School placements will take into account any disabilities.
