Maths Enhancement Course

 

Type: Full Time, 1 Unit

 

Dates: 16th August to 27th August 10

 

Number of places: 20

 

Who is it for?

The course is aimed at those who hold a conditional offer on a Secondary PGCE/GTP school based training programme that leads to QTS, but must complete successfully an intensive short enhancement programme in Mathematics to meet the entry criteria for subject knowledge.

 

It is envisaged that participants will have studied a significant amount of Mathematics in their degree programmes, but would benefit from both an enhancement and refresher of the A level and Further Mathematics A level material.

 

Course Structure

This is a full time Course lasting ten days.  The programme will run from 9.15 am to 4.15 pm and will be based at the University of Gloucestershire Francis Close Hall Campus in Cheltenham.

It will consist of whole group teaching sessions, supported self-study on individual targets, directed tasks and two self-study days

 

Course Content

Teaching and learning approaches will include tutor taught sessions, group and paired work, guided individual study and participants' presentations.

 

There will be modules in: Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.

There will be an emphasis on developing 'deep understanding' of knowledge, understanding, skills and applications together with 'making connections'.

Resources

Participants will be provided with a graphical calculator, a booklet of A level past exam style questions and textbooks in Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics.

 

Assessment

Each participant will produce a portfolio of evidence which will feed into a Record of Achievement. This will include:

 

  • A completed self audit of 'A' level and Further Maths 'A' level topics.
  • An Individual Training Plan with targets for the Enhancement Course and teacher training year.
  • Assessment of 'exam style' questions.
  • Presentation feedback.
  • List of taught topics on the Course
  • Individual log
  • Record of attendance
